"Copy & Paste’ - Hidden Asperger’s-- Girls with Aspergers | Niamh McCann | TEDxDunLaoghaire

10:05
16 year old Niamh McCann is passionate about many things including ballet, the plays of William Shakespeare, the environment and public speaking! Her talk looks at the challenges of the high-functioning end of the Autistic Spectrum for girls. Niamh is a quiet, sensitive girl who studied hard, got good grades and not one to cause trouble. She researched the reasons why girls on the spectrum are often misdiagnosed or have late diagnosis. Her hope is that through her talk and sharing what she has learnt, all girls on the spectrum will feel freer to embrace who they are and that those who are yet to be diagnosed are not afraid to do so. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

See the world through her Asperger eyes: Wendy Lampen at TEDxDelft

10:08
Wendy Lampen (Belgium, 1969 -- @lampadedromy) works as a lecturer for a university of applied sciences. She got diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome herself. Trained as a teacher in English, History and Ethics she later on worked with adolescents with autism in a school setting. Next to being an MA in autism, she extensively studied neurotypical (non-autistic) behaviour in order to understand people better. It gave her insight into what really set her apart from (most of the) others: sensory processing and its ongoing processes and the way the two braintypes give meaning to the world they experience. This hightend awareness made her start her own company with her (neurotypical) partner. From her international experience in how different cultures look at autism or 'disorders' in general, Wendy is an advocate for a neuro-divers society. She focusses on the competences and the possibilities of the different braintypes and how they each can contribute to a richer life. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Autism in Females: How is it Different? | Kati Morton

08:48
Order my book today! ARE U OK? http://geni.us/sva4iUY In case you weren’t aware, Autism Spectrum Disorder (or ASD) affects 1 in every 68 children, and are much more commonly diagnosed in boys. Some studies show that boys are four times more likely than girls to have an ASD, but new research suggests that it may appear differently in girls, and therefore go undiagnosed or possibly be misdiagnosed as something entirely different. The criteria for diagnosing autism spectrum disorder (ASD)—a developmental condition that is marked by social and communication difficulties and repetitive, inflexible patterns of behavior—are based on data derived almost entirely from studies of boys. This lack of data surrounding how ASD may affect a female has lead to years of misunderstanding and misdiagnosis, especially for those girls on the higher functioning end of the spectrum. Research has shown that females who received a diagnosis of ASD at a very young age were much more affected by the ASD than their male counterparts. They showed lower IQs and extreme behavioral problems, whereas the boys who were diagnosed did not have to be so severe to get proper treatment. In a very recent study (2016) they found that even the way that the brain processes social information is different based on the sex of the child. Boys with ASD use certain portions of their brain to manage social situations, and those regions are different than boys without ASD, so seeing those parts of their brain light up during a social interaction was an easy way to diagnose. However, in girls with ASD it’s not like that. In a girl with ASDs brain, it lights up in the same way that a non ASD boy’s would. Why is that? We don’t know, and they are doing follow up research on this interesting finding right now, but this has already been supported by a completely different study conducted in Australia on 25 boys with ASD and 25 girls with ASD. Researchers believe that this occurs because of our sex hormones. We already know that men and women are very different, but maybe we don’t fully understand just HOW different we are. They also believe that girls as much better at noticing and mimicking behavior, and will work really hard to appear completely “normal.” Therefore in order to properly diagnose a girl with ASD you will need to not just observe them, but also talk with them about their personal experience with socializing or managing change. They also find that boys with autism are not really interested in socializing and when asked will report that they don’t really care if they have any friends. Girls on the other hand, do care, and show a much greater desire to connect. They also found that girls with ASD don’t tend to have as much repetitive behavior as the boys, and many of their pastimes and interests are similar to other girls without ASD. Last, they share that girls with ASD tend to be viewed as too much. Meaning they are often too intense, too sensitive, or too rigid. Many girls have been diagnosed with OCD, ADHD, and even anorexia instead of ASD like they should have been. Anorexia in the female ASD population is much higher than non ASD girls, and they believe that many of the symptoms and profiles of the 2 diagnosis work together. Meaning that the rigidity, focus, and detail oriented nature of both ASD and eating disorders can mean that EDs are the way that ASD can show itself in the female population. They also find that females with ASD (since they tend to take things literally and are direct) they can more easily fall victim to sexual exploitation (such as assault, abusive relationships, etc). They say this especially for females because just as we discussed earlier, they want connection, and are aware of their their struggle to make friends and build relationships. So they may be with someone just because they show them a little attention, or even if that attention isn’t kind or loving. So be careful. Is Asperger's syndrome the next stage of human evolution?: Tony Attwood | Australian Story

26:19
Professor Tony Attwood believes the "out of the box" thought processes of people on the autism spectrum will solve the world's big problems. He is credited with being the first clinical psychologist to present Asperger's syndrome not as something to be "fixed " but as a gift, evidenced in many of the great inventors and artists throughout history. But while Professor Attwood has reached the top of his field, he reveals in this episode of Australian Story the personal cost of a missed diagnosis in his own family. Early in his career, he didn't see the signs of Asperger's in his son Will. The consequences were devastating for everyone.

Some of the main signs of autism in girls is social anxiety, this is a huge one for mild autism symptoms. The telltale sings of autism is repetitive behaviour and obsessive interstices, this also translates to women with autism and Aspergers in girls. Girls with autism can present themselves as typical, but to the person who understands the condition of autism and Asperger’s syndrome it may be easy to spot autism in girls. The autistic girl has always been a topic that has been some what missed, this is one of the mission of The Aspie World to create awareness for autism in girls. A search of autism symptoms checklist on google will show up lots and lots of autism symptoms and Aspergers traits. But these will almost always be from a male perspective of diagnosing aspergers symptoms in men and not autism in girls. This video is dedicated to the understanding of autism in girls and autism spectrum disorder. Hi guys! This video will span across 4 parts because there's a lot to get in. This part focusses on 'Appearance/Personal Health' and includes the following traits, which I discuss in relation to myself: 'Dresses comfortably due to sensory issues and practicality': 0:47 'Will not spend much time on grooming and hair. Hairstyles usually have to be 'wash and wear'. Can be quite happy not grooming at all at times': 01:18 'Eccentric personality; may be reflected in appearance': 02:54 'Is youthful for her age, in looks, dress, behaviour and tastes': 03:12 'Usually a little more expressive in face and gesture than male counterparts': 03:30 'May have many androgynous traits despite an outwardly feminine appearance. Thinks of herself as half male/half female': 04:06 'May not have a strong sense of identity, and can be very chameleon --like, especially before diagnosis': 04:44 'Enjoys reading and films as a retreat, often sci-fi, fantasy, children's, can have favourites which are a refuge': 05:41 'Uses control as a stress management technique: rules, discipline, rigid in certain habits, which will contradict her seeming unconventionality': 06:06 'Usually happiest at home or in other controlled environment': 06:41 And this is the list of traits I'm working through: http://www.help4aspergers.com/pb/wp_a58d4f6a/images/img244154ad237783e339.JPG If you liked the video, please subscribe/share/like it/comment etc., as all of that is really helpful for me! AUTISM in Girls: DIAGNOSIS (5 things YOU Need To Know)

20:10
Autism in girls is always a second thought when diagnosing females. This video outlines things you need to know about the an autism females diagnosis. ANNAS SOCIALS: YouTube: http://bit.ly/2XJ772m Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dynamitejetmoom/ Autism in girls test or diagnosis is a formal diagnosis process that takes place at a specialist centre or clinic. Autism in girls symptoms can vary from that of the traits seen in males due to many factors like masking etc. This can create an issue for the old way of diagnosing women with autism. Autism in females or autism and women is the same as autism in males, it just presents itself in a slightly different way, but has the same impact. Up until recently the female autism test was not accurate as it was still trying to examine the autism symptoms in males. This however has started to change recently and is getting better but not 100% there yet. Autistic girls do, I feel have a harder time as most help, support and books have been written about the males on the autism spectrum. That being said, i think we are seeing more effort put into making this better for females on the spectrum. 🔴SUBSCRIBE ➤ http://bit.ly/AutismYouTube 💼 WORK WITH ME → [email protected] 👕MY MERCH → http://bit.ly/TAW_Merch 📘50% OFF AUTISM PARENTING MAGAZINE → http://bit.ly/AUTISMPM 🐥TWEET THIS VIDEO ➤ 👥SHARE ON FACEBOOK ➤ 🖇SHARE ON LINKED IN ➤ AUTISM ESSENTIAL MUST HAVES ⬇️ ----------------------------------------------------------- → CBD GUMMIES UK → http://www.yuminutrition.com?aff=2 → CBD GUMMIES USA → http://yuminutrition.us?aff=6 → 15% OFF AUTISM STIM TOYS / GADGETS → http://bit.ly/StimToys → AUTISM ALERT CARD: http://bit.ly/AutismAlertCard → NOISE CANCELLING HEADPHONES → http://amzn.to/2goVuKf → CHEWABLE JEWELLERY → http://bit.ly/Chewable_Autism → ELASTIC SHOE LACES → http://amzn.to/2gnWm1L → WEIGHTED BLANKET → https://amzn.to/2NkmCZK → MY BOOK [GET IT HERE] → http://amzn.to/2D7XvDf ► VPN I USE → http://bit.ly/TAW_PIA ► HOW I GROW MY CHANNEL → http://bit.ly/TAW_TubeBuddy **************************************************** ⚡️DIGEST THIS ON ⚡️ MY BLOG → http://bit.ly/TAW_Blog MY PODCAST → http://bit.ly/TAW_Podcast TIKTOK → http://bit.ly/TAW_Tik_Tok **************************************************** FOR MORE FOLLOW MY SOCIALS ⬇️ -------------------------------------------------- ► INSTAGRAM: http://bit.ly/TAW_Insta ► TWITTER: http://bit.ly/TAW_Twitter ► FACEBOOK: http://bit.ly/TAW_FaceBook ► SNAPCHAT: http://bit.ly/TAW_SnapChat FOR YOU! - JOIN THE COMMUNITY ⬇️ -------------------------------------------------------------- ► Join The Super Squad → http://bit.ly/2FHuaor ► Join The Mailing List → http://bit.ly/Autism_Updates ► Facebook Group: http://bit.ly/TAW_SuperFans ► SUPPORT THIS CHANNEL → http://bit.ly/TAW_Patreon 👾Our Discord → http://bit.ly/TAW_Discord 👽Our Reddit → http://bit.ly/TAW_Reddit ************************************************** ABOUT ME: Helping people understand the Autism Spectrum from an adult with Autism. I spoke with an autism girl about autism in girls and women and how the traits differ from that in males. There are probably just as many autism women as there are men in the world but we just don't have the diagnostic understanding everywhere yet to diagnose them. But be it an autistic girl or an autistic man, the autism symptoms are the same at the core of the condition, with co-morbid issues like communication, mental health issues and OCD. I love to help spread awareness and understanding about autism in girls as it is something i have found that is missing online. I hope to make more videos about autism in girls on my channel to help educate more people about autism in girls. The Truth About Asperger's Syndrome - 4.5 - The Female Perspective

12:30
Special thanks to Patricia, Jess, Sarah and Abby for making this episode possible! Living on the spectrum is difficult, and I don't think people appreciate what it's truly like. This is the fourth (and a half ;D) part of a series of videos where I discuss the various symptoms of Asperger's Syndrome (high-functioning autism) and give examples from my own life regarding what it's like to live with AS. Modus Operandi: Whether you have a personal relationship with somebody who has AS, or you’ve only met an AS sufferer once, I hope these videos will help you appreciate the true difficulty of living with the syndrome. I am doing these videos not because I am seeking pity… I am not seeking pity. Please do not go out of your way to offer it. I am doing this because I know there are a lot of young boys and girls who have the syndrome and do not know they have it. I wasn’t diagnosed with AS until I was 18, and being undiagnosed can lead to confusing, embarrassing, and sometimes traumatic experiences… experiences which are not just unique to me. In fact, they afflict the majority of people who have AS. If I had known when I was younger that I had the syndrome, I could have saved myself a lot of grief and lived a much more fulfilling, productive life. That’s not to say I don’t lead a happy life now… but I think we can all agree that by addressing these types of problems earlier, we can spend much more of our life feeling fulfilled and feeling productive, especially considering we have such a short time on this planet. 22 Asperger's signs and traits in adults

02:27
Common signs or traits of Apserger's Syndrome in adults. Many of the signs and symptoms in the list below may be hidden in adults. For example, adults with Asperger's Syndrome may experience few angry meltdowns in public if they have learnt to avoid the situations that trigger them. Additionally many adults with Asperger's eventually learn how to 'fit in' by observing social behaviour and copying it. Asperger's Related Links: http://jadejoddle.com/category/aspergers/ 1. Misunderstood – most people just don’t get you. Feeling different or as if you come from another planet. 2. Sensory overwhelm – sometimes your senses are too sharp. Sight, touch, sound, hearing and sense of smell may be uncomfortably strong at times. 3. Angry explosion meltdowns – may happen when triggered or feeling trapped. Although you mostly avoid situations like this, it can happen that when overwhelmed or extremely uncomfortable you explode with rage. 4. Crying meltdowns – may happen when overwhelmed. After exploding in anger you may feel distraught and cry uncontrollably. 5. Silent shutdowns – times when you can’t speak or socialise. Sometimes you may prevent explosions by going silent and withdrawn. When this happens you want to get away from people and to be quiet until you are calm again. 6. Avoidance – not going places you imagine will be hard for you socially. To avoid the meltdowns, sneaky avoidance habits may develop. There may be many situations you avoid out of the fear of being overwhelmed or uncomfortable. However, since the avoidance is sneaky it is often hard to admit it about oneself. 7. Head person – logical person who thinks and analyses. You are pragmatic and make decisions based on analysis. 8. Pattern finder – the way you look at life you see patterns in everything. Having the ability to connect the dots to come up with original ideas or ways of understanding people and the world. 9. Open book – when comfortable, extremely open and honest. More open than people in general when feeling comfortable and accepted. 10. Bluntness and directness – your words are straight talking. You favour literal and direct communication. You may be confused when people say things they don’t mean e.g. false politeness. 11. Normal friendship is alienating – feeling alone and empty when being friends in the normal way. Being friends in the ‘normal’ way is either something that you can’t do or it is social behaviour you had to learn by observing. 12. Dissolving boundaries – when you find a friend boundaries dissolve. You may be too clingy or bossy. Your ‘real friends’ are a joy to spend time with and they understand you. However, relationships with such people may be rare. Close friendships may lack healthy boundaries and you may have been described as cling, bossy or controlling by a friend or partner. 13. Awkward about social touch – you don’t really touch other people or if you do you don’t really like it. The exception is that you may ONLY enjoy touch with your romantic partner. Otherwise social touch such as hugging, patting on the shoulder etc. is all stuff that has to be learned and forced, rather than comes naturally. 14. Monotone or hypnotic speech patterns. Normal speaking voice is monotone or hypnotic. 15. Strong self-discipline – you keep to your chosen routines. Extremely focused and dedicated to the things you chose to do or work on. 16. Mind going blank and empty – may happen when surprised or overwhelmed. The feeling of the mind going blank is like a frozen empty pause in which the mind is not able to think for at least a second, though it feels like longer it lasts for longer inside. 17. Child-like imagination – a part of you never grows old. When feeling comfortable you express a childlike quality, no matter what age you are. 18. Bad with hair – you just can’t do it! Not good at styling hair. Hair may feel uncomfortable at times. 19. Eccentric interests – unusual hobbies or collections. Has specialist research hobbies or daily activities. These can be about anything though are often something unusual. 20. Repetitive eating habits – you always eat the same thing or follow a rigid diet. Either prefers to eat the same thing most of the time or follows a specialist diet that restricts certain foods. Chooses an eating plan for various health or personal reasons and then sticks with it (isn’t tempted to go off the diet like most people are). 21. Makes funny noises – when comfortable the sounds you create carry meaning in communication. Plays with the voice and accent or speaks with sounds instead of words. When feeling comfortable and accepted may make wet noises, high pitched noises or other noises to express feelings in the moment rather than use words. 22. Inflexible about time and plans – may freak out if plans change unexpectedly. Doesn’t like plans being changed. Lateness can trigger anxiety.
